Let’s Be Friends!

Let's make a difference together by speaking words of life.

Who Are You, Mama?

The other day we were all in the kitchen and started talking about tall and short people.

Someone commented, “I don’t want to be tall.”

I said, “Kids, you grow up to be exactly the height God designed you to be. That’s the height that is perfect for you.”

Then we started talking about the benefits of being tall such as how you could reach high things. And my son blurted out, “I’m going to reach goals!”

Where do kids come up with these things?

Now this episode is not about setting and reaching goals. What it is about is growing up and being exactly who God designed you to be. I’m still growing up, Mama. I haven’t arrived yet, but I am on my way to living out God’s purposes for my life. I’m having fun being married, being a mom homeschooling our three children, and working in the businesses God has called me to.

How about you? Who are you, Mama? In what do you find your identity? It matters because from your identity you live out all areas of your life. What you say, think, and believe about yourself is more important than what you do.

ANSWERING THE QUESTION: WHO YOU ARE, MAMA?

While helping at a kids’ camp this summer, I was asked to lead a devotion one morning for the camp counselors. I gave them all a slip of paper and asked them to write on the paper one word that described who they are. They were to write down the first word that came to their mind, an adjective that described who they are.

I ask you the same thing. Who are you, Mama? What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about who you are?

Before I collected the counsellor’s papers, I had them look at it and see if their adjective told: 1) What they said about themself 2) What others said about them? or 3) Did they write what God says about them? How would you answer this based on what you thought?

For some counsellors, it was super easy to think of an adjective that described who they are. They wrote a word right away. I was surprised how for others, it was hard. They couldn’t think of a word to describe themselves. Some even turned their slip of paper in blank.

KNOWING WHO YOU ARE BECAUSE OF WHO DEFINES YOU

Then I encouraged the camp counsellors with this same thing that I want to remind you of. You can pass this encouragement on to your children.

Remember that there is One who defines Who you are. One where it matters more what He says about you than what you even say about yourself. One whom you live to please and obey more than pleasing people and caring what adjectives they would use to describe you. The One is God.

Do you know well what God says and thinks about you? So much so that when you look in the mirror, you say what God says about you. I’m working on this as I renew my mind and stay intentional with my words and beliefs.

When I face a challenge and wonder what should I do? How should we handle this? I go back to who God says I am.

WHO GOD SAYS YOU ARE, MAMA

  • God calls you His daughter. If you know Him as your Savior, you have been adopted into His family. He is your Abba, Father, Daddy. You are God’s girl. Special. Galatians 4:7 and Romans 8:15
  • You are loved. God loves you as He loves His Son, Jesus. The love of the Father is in you.  John 17:23, 26
  • You share God’s nature just as your children share yours.  You are a partaker or sharer of the divine (like God) nature. Let the Father’s DNA in you shine through. You look like your Heavenly Father. You are made in God’s image.  II Peter 1:4 and Genesis 1:27
  • He sings love songs over you and rejoices over you for good with shouts of joy. Zephaniah 3:17
  • God says of you that you are adequate. You are good enough. He said of you along with all of His creation that it was very good. Genesis 1:31
  • He delights in you with gladness.  He renews you with His love. He waits on high to be gracious to you.  Isaiah 30:18
  • You are a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord.  Isaiah 62:3-4
  • He has called you, chosen you. He has not rejected you. Isaiah 41:9
  • You are forgiven. You are in right standing, wholly accepted, heard and seen by Father God.  You have no past with Jesus. Your past is under His shed blood.  Live today in His promises.
  • You are in Christ. He bought your righteousness, sanctification, and redemption through His shed blood on the cross. Boast not in yourself, but in the Lord. I Corinthians 1:30-31
  • You are already equipped for every good work that God has planned for you. II Timothy 3:17

RENEW YOUR MIND TO WHO GOD SAYS YOU ARE

A lack of confidence and right beliefs about who you are leads you to put others down and criticize. That was my story in my early parenting. I lacked confidence and criticized my husband because I didn’t like the mama I was. I took my insecurities out on him. Hear my story here on the Renewed Mama Podcast.

Your finances, work, business endeavours, and motherhood does not define who you are. God does. Renew your mind to who He says you are. Take time away to a quiet place, and listen to what He says. Ask Him, Who do You say I am, God? Search His Word. Write down what He tells you from the Bible. Write it on Post-It Notes around your house.

From an understanding of who God says you are, you can serve, work, change diapers, scrub toilets, and get up at night with a sick child. How beautiful to grow up in and to walk in strong confidence in who God says you are. I pray that for you, Mama, and for your children to come to that understanding as well.

This makes me think of Speak Life Badges sticker awards that say, I am priceless, I am important, I am special, I am extraordinary, I have purpose, I am loved, I am successful. God says all of these about your children just as He says them over you. So speak these words of life and truth to your children in a fun, sticky way using Speak Life Badges.

Who are you, Mama? Your identity matters because what you say, think, and believe about yourself is more important than what you do.
